Newly Diagnosed and Feeling Alone? PCRI Help Line has answers.

If you are among the 238,590 men estimated to be newly diagnosed with Prostate health problems this year, you will find support and answers through the programs of the Prostate Research Institute.

A great draw at the recent PCRI annual conference was the Panel Discussion on Friday afternoon. Following registration, the afternoon was filled with visits to the Exhibitors at your convenience, between Support Group Meetings for the Newly Diagnosed; Advanced, Disease; Active Surveillance; and then workshops for Multi-parametric Prostate MRI Effects on Management; PSA (“biochemical”) Recurrence; Metastatic and Castrate Resistant PC; and Newly Diagnosed: Understanding Your Risk. The wrap-up Panel Discussion with PCRI Education Staff played to a packed house, and the hotel had to hustle to set up dozens of more chairs to accommodate the attentive audience.

The Panel was moderated by Jan Manarite, the wife of a prostate patient, whose husband’s PSA at one time reached 7,000. Jan has been with PCRI for over 10 years, handling Help Line calls, emails, writing and speaking. She was joined on the panel by Dr. David Derris, a retired orthodontist, who has studied prostate health issues for more than 15 years after being diagnosed with prostate problems; Dr. Dean Foster a retired orthopedic surgeon who underwent prostate surgery; and Nathan Roundy, whose own experience with prostate problems led him to become a volunteer on the Help Line, and ultimately became the Program’s Director at PCRI.

The HelpLine is there to share information, dispel misinformation, and help men weigh the Risk vs Benefit of various choices. The HelpLine is not there to advise treatment or overstate facts. PCRI can help you understand how to:

  • Get your medical records – YOU are entitled to your medical records
  • Better understand your cancer
  • Help you develop better questions for their medical advisors
  • Dispel misinformation
  • Fill in missing information
