Choosing vegetable fats may lower prostate health mortality

Choosing vegetable fats from unsaturated oils and nuts, over carbohydrates and animal fats, may lower the risk of death in men with prostate health problems. The study by Dr. Erin L. Richman, Sc.D., and researchers from the University of California, San Francisco is published in the Journal of the American Medical Association¹. The researchers analyzed data from 4,577 men diagnosed with prostate issues between 1986 and 2010 who were enrolled in the Health Professionals Follow-up Study. The study conclusion supported counseling men with prostate problem to follow a heart-healthy diet by replacing animal fat and carbohydrates with vegetable fats, while at the same time noting that further research is needed to prove the benefit as it relates to prostate health by conducting randomized studies. The only known modifiable prostate risk factor which has been proven by research is the avoidance of obesity.
